BOTOX Cosmetic™ is used in the treatment of “dynamic wrinkles”. These are wrinkles that are caused by repeated muscular contractions such as frowning, squinting, and brow furrowing. BOTOX Cosmetic™, an intramuscular injection derived from a purified protein toxin, reduces dynamic wrinkles by preventing the muscles from contracting. A few drops are injected with a tiny needle into the muscle, blocking the nerve impulse from reaching that area. As the muscle weakens, the wrinkles in the skin gradually soften, giving the face a more relaxed look.
Areas most commonly treated are the frown lines between the eyebrows, worry lines on the brow, and crow’s feet around the eyes. The excellent results achieved have made BOTOX Cosmetic™ the most popular technique used in our office for upper face rejuvenation. Other dynamic lines such as those at the upper lip and chin can also be easily treated with this technique. In some individuals, thick muscle cords on the front of the neck give an aged appearance. These are also improved with BOTOX Cosmetic™. The procedure is so quick and simple that patients often have it done during their lunch hour.
The effects of BOTOX Cosmetic™ wear off in about 3 to 4 months, at which time another injection may be administered. As time goes on and the muscles are put to rest, the creases formed by their actions tend to smooth out and do not worsen over time. Slight redness, swelling, and bruising may follow treatment and last for a few hours to days. Results are usually evident in 2-7 days.
• Cost $350-$1000, depending on number of units used.
What is BOTOX COSMETIC®?
BOTOX COSMETIC® is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacteria. Although BOTOX COSMETIC® is derived from a bacteria, it is able to be used for the treatments described previously because it is applied in extremely small amounts and when applied properly does not spread throughout the body. :: back to top
How is BOTOX COSMETIC® used?
A tiny amount of BOTOX COSMETIC® is injected into the muscle that creates the dynamic wrinkle. When BOTOX COSMETIC® is injected into a muscle, it blocks the nerve impulse from reaching that area, and as a result, the muscle relaxes. As the muscle relaxes, the dynamic wrinkle overlying the muscle is smoothed away.
Where can BOTOX COSMETIC® be injected?
The most common areas for the use of BOTOX COSMETIC® are the frown lines between the eyebrows and on the forehead. On occasion, some other areas may be treated as well; however in Canada, BOTOX COSMETIC® is only cleared for use for frown lines between the eyebrows.
Does BOTOX COSMETIC® freeze my face?
No. BOTOX COSMETIC® only relaxes the overactive muscle underneath the dynamic wrinkle. The other elements of facial expression remain active.
How long does a BOTOX COSMETIC® treatment last?
The effects of BOTOX COSMETIC® usually last three to four months, at which time another injection is required. After several treatments, the effects of BOTOX COSMETIC® may begin to last longer.
Are BOTOX COSMETIC® treatments safe?
BOTOX COSMETIC® has been used safely and successfully in ophthalmology for over 15 years, and for wrinkle therapy for over 10 years. In the amounts used for wrinkle therapy, the most common side effects are temporary and localized to the area of injection.
Is this treatment for everyone?
There are very few restrictions regarding BOTOX COSMETIC® treatments. Patients who are pregnant, nursing or have a neurologic disease should not be treated. Patients should discuss with their physician if BOTOX COSMETIC® treatments are appropriate for them.
What is the treatment like?
A tiny amount of BOTOX COSMETIC® is injected, very precisely, into the muscles being treated. Because the needle is so fine and only a small amount of liquid is used, the pain associated with the injections is minimal. Most patients compare the sensation to a bug bite. No sedation or local anesthetic is required, and you can resume normal activities immediately. You can even drive yourself home or back to the office. Some patients experience a slight temporary bruising at the injection site. This can be covered with make-up.
